Sympathies from Friends
It is always sad to lose a family member, especially a grandparent. This past Wednesday, my grandmother, Nadia Kimsey past away at the age of 81. She was always a strong woman and Christian. Thanks to her, my father is a strong Christian. God blessed me with the best family ever and I would not replace any of them. My father is just as strong as my grandmother was and I am especially grateful for him and his love for me. Besides having great parents and a great family, I have been blessed with great friends. The help, sympathy, and love I received from friends during this time of sadness was outrageous! I could not express my thanks enough to my co-workers at the Board of Professional Responsibility of the Supreme Court of Tennessee. Thank you Lord for giving me such Blessings here on Earth!

A New Year Beginning
I can't believe it! I have been out of school for over a month now! It stills doesn't seem like I have a degree in History. It was as if I just completed another round of school, nothing else. Now I am working on job opportunities, praying hard. I have several possibilities in Nashville as well as an apt possibility in Murfreesboro. I just hope everything works out and soon. I have been home since the beginning of the year. It is great to be home with my wonderful family. I have been able to help mom around the house, we've been cleaning out the attic. Also, she has an amazing catering business going, so I am glad to be here to help her.
I also can't believe I have two nieces (my older brother's), and my two sisters are both in high school! Wow! That's all I can say. I hope to type again soon!
God Bless

A Month of Summer Left!
It is hard to believe that we only have about a month of summer left before the fall semester. I will be on my 9th semester of college and my last. Graduation is just around the corner (December 18th)! At least to me it is just around the corner. I can't wait!
This summer has been very interesting. I finished up my general education requirements with a statistics course. Other than class, I have been working. I have two jobs now and am enjoying them. For the first couple of months this summer I lived with my grandmother. Needless to say, it was not the best housing situation. I felt like I was living with a typical roommate. It stressed me out too much, and I was able to get back to campus. With help from friends and their prayers, I have moved forward.
It is getting close to the elections this year too! The Primary Elections are on August 5th. I can't wait to see the results. I hope the country sees a "change" and a statement made by the elections. As for Tennessee, the governor's race will be interesting in its self. We shall see!
This fall, I am taking easy classes just to finish up my credit hours for graduation. Classes include "World Geography", "Map and Mapping", "Global Politics", "Research Methods", and "Under Hitler's Shadow". History, Political Science, and Geography classes that are at lower levels than senior classes. I am looking forward to all of them.
In my four years of college, this was my first summer to stay here in Chattanooga and not go home. The reason was for class and jobs. I figured it would be a bad idea to go back to Martin to try and find a job for a couple of months. However, I have also found how hard it is to be away from the family so long with out getting to see them. Between Christmas and the end of June, the only times I was able to go home was for a couple of weekends. I finally got a chance to stay home for a week in June. The bond I have with my family is strong and I miss laughing with everyone at home and playing ridiculous games, that my sisters always won!:)
That's part of life though. I hope anyone who reads this is doing well. God Bless!

Hello from Chattanooga
It has been way too long since I have written/typed to say hello. I am doing very well and hope you all are too. This past fall I returned to UTC and hit the ground running with school. I continue to really miss Nashville and the scenes at the state capital. I have kept in contact with friends at the capital and have even been able to visit them. I have been quite busy with school and my position with Housing. When I returned to campus, I also took up a second job, working for the Safety and Risk Management Department. I inspect buildings on campus checking fire extinguishers and emergency lights. This department is one of the best on campus, mainly because of the people who work in it. I have been able to work at my own pace and on my own time. I also get to work events that take place in our athletics arena including, concerts and WWE Raw.
I am still working for Housing. This semester I was promoted to ARD (Assistant Resident Director). It is somewhat different from the RA position with a different role, minus that with residents. Instead of being on RA Duty during the semester, I have office hours! Plus better pay! UTC Housing has gone through a lot of change this year and most of it has only hurt the RAs and ARDs. More things to do, and less time to do them. The thought that we are students has disappeared. No matter, I plan on sticking it out, hopefully through the summer, and then I will be done.
Classes have been going very well. This semester I am taking 12 hours including, the History of Scotland, History of Traditional Japan, Seminars in History: the Reign of Elizabeth I, and Spanish. History of Scotland is probably my favorite class! There are so many things from Scotland's history that we use today and thoughts debated even today. For instance, the right for Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Property comes from... Scottish thinkers!! Our discussions in the class are very interesting!
Not only are classes keeping me busy, but I am working on a special project of my own. My semester project is a program called "Thank the Troops". Through Housing, I am working on this program to compile a huge care package for troops overseas. My goal is to go to the student body and to get items donated for this care package. Not only is this a campus-wide program, I have gone also to the community. The package will be sent to soldiers from the Chattanooga area and therefore the community should also be involved. I have contacted organizations on campus like the Baptist Collegiate Ministry, Sororities, the Bookstore, and ROTC to help get the word out. The manager of the bookstore has really jumped on board and helping me out by offering a $100 textbook scholarship to the student who brings in the most items! I have drop-off locations all around campus. I proposed this program to our RHA (Residence Halls Association) and ask if it would help pay for the shipping costs. They agreed to it! Everything has fallen into place and I am very excited about this program, hoping that it turns out big!
Well, that's about it for my spring semester. The days are being counted down! Graduation comes this December! Less than a year (Can you Believe it...Mom, Dad?)! What happens after graduation? Well, I hope to return to the capital in Nashville, and I hope to move there for a position. Secondly, I plan to continue my education, eventually, and get my masters in Public Administration. This of course can all change if it be God's will! No matter what, I don't think I will be staying in Chattanooga. I actually can see myself moving back to Martin someday! (Completely different from four years ago!)
To wrap things up, I hope you all are doing well. God Bless!

Why are you attending college?
Okay, so why is it important for students to go to college today? If you are thinking for education and for a better life and career, well I would have agreed with you a year ago. However, since becoming an RA for the Housing department and after seeing and hearing all the problems that we have had, it is not so simple anymore. I am in an apartment building of freshmen. First, freshmen are either 17,18, or maybe 19. The point is they are definitely under the age for many things. Secondly, most of my residents are females who think they have to be a part of these sororities in order to get anywhere with college. Their first priority here on campus is not school or grades, but social activities and parties. So, what's wrong with this picture? Getting involved on campus is a great thing to do because it is supposed to encourage spirit for one's school; however, today, social activities and 'getting involved on campus' turn out to be more about parties. Yes everyone needs to have fun while they are in college! But at what expense? Breaking Laws and Policies?
Four out of Twelve of my rooms have been caught with alcohol. At least that is all I know of. What is happening to our future? More and more under age drinking is taking over, and a high rise of smoking has been seen on our campus too! How does someone decide to break laws or rules and believe that they should not be punished? Well, thanks to our college's administration, when students break rules like this, they are given a 'slap on the wrist'. This tells the students that they can try again! The university is so worried about getting their student's tuition now-a-days that they won't just throw students out.
Just the other night I had to bust a room of freshmen who were drinking. The police knocked and they thought for some reason that they did have to open the door unless the officers had some search warrant. Standing there while the officers went through the room and took down everyone's information I noticed how much the students did not even care that they got caught. Our society and our future has lost it's conscious and guilt for doing wrong.
While I was interning at the state capitol, a representative, actually a former UTC professor, claimed that the state is the true parent. When she said that I gagged with the thought. But, ever since I have been back at UTC, I see how true her thought has become. The university and state institutions like the university, has had to take it upon themselves to parent the youth because there is no parenting at home anymore.
I hate to see how much I have become a skeptic, and I know that this is a large assumption and that this is not true for every student or family. But, things are not getting any better, they are getting worse. What can we do to help it change? I believe this question is what is making me push myself towards my goals!

A Plank In Your Own Eye
Today in Spanish Class, our professor ask us to describe hispanics and name things that come to mind when we see or hear hispanics. Many talked about fiestas, ciestas, and food. It was fun as we thought of pintas and good food. However, the next part of class was disturbing. Our professor asked us to also describe Americans. Right away, students started naming out adjectives like greedy, materialistic, fat, and lazy. It is quite disturbing to see college students to analyze their own country in this way. I believe I was even more disturbed with the fact that those who made these judgemental descriptions were wearing very nice clothes and jewelry, and more than likely drive nice cars. What has happened to our youth and young adults? Do they not see they describe themselves? We have lost the pride in our country and the liberty given to us. And instead of taking care of our own faults, we want to point out everyone else's problems. America's youth is in for a rude awakening as they venture out into the real world and don't have their mom and dad there to give them everything.
